French Soul, Jersey Heart: Why Adour Bistro is Bayonne’s Must-Visit Gem

I went to AdourBistro months ago with my family and then went completely quiet about it.

Partly because life moves fast. Partly because my toddler — who discoveredthere were no high chairs that evening — treated the entire restaurant like herpersonal welcome tour. Walking everywhere. Saying hello to tables she had nobusiness being at. Making the kind of ruckus that makes you want to disappearinto your chair while secretly being proud of how much confidence fits insideone tiny human.

I was going to let this one go. Then the other day, we were trying to figureout where to go for brunch, and Adour popped up. And I thought — why haven't Itold anyone about this place? Bayonne has something here that people shouldknow about.

So here we are.

You walk in and the room has this warmth to it — not just the lighting, thoughthe lighting is good, but the kind of warmth that only happens when someonebuilt a place with actual intention. There's a framed poster of Bayonne, Franceon the wall. The restaurant is named after the Adour River that winds throughthe French city, and if you look down at your knife, it has Adour engraved onthe blade. You don't notice these things right away. You notice them slowly, between conversation and your second glass of wine, and then you realize —someone cared about every corner of this room.

We ordered the chicken liver pâté, the monkfish, the duck confit, the hangersteak. The pâté alone made me regret every time I've ever agreed to share astarter. The rest was the kind of food that makes you stop talking and justeat.

The owner came by our table more than once. Warm, unhurried, the kind of hostwho makes you feel like you're at someone's home and not a restaurant. Hewanted the write-up — just not his photo taken. Which is honestly kind ofcharming.

Go for date night. Go for brunch. Go because you live in Bayonne and this isthe kind of place that makes you glad you do. And if you're bringing a toddler, maybe call ahead about the high chair situation — unless you want yours tobecome the unofficial host of the evening.

Ours certainly did.
