Goodbye Traffic, Hello Ferry: Bayonne-to-Manhattan Ride Could Be Here Soon

Written by Sheetal Pawar

Hey, lean in — I’ve got a Bayonne secret.

You know that Bayonne-to-Manhattan ferry people have been whispering about for years? The one that promises to make our commute less about traffic and more about salty breezes? Well, construction at Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor (MOTBY) has officially begun.

It’s still moving at a Harbor speed” (because ferries, water… and slow), but every time I spot workers on-site, I can already picture myself boarding that ferry, coffee from Lavaccino in hand, and waving a dramatic “see you soon” to Bayonne.

And get this — while no official timeline has been released, the Bayonne rumor mill is buzzing with travel times of just 11 to 15 minutes from Bayonne to Manhattan. Eleven minutes! That’s way quicker than the trip to Grove Street to catch the PATH.

The Construction is indeed happening of what looks like an extension of walkway

The Bayonne ferry terminal is being built at Peninsula Harbor, formerly known as MOTBY — a spot already famous for its Fourth of July views of the Brooklyn Bridge fireworks. The City of Bayonne recently finalized a $4.4 million deal with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to purchase 2.3 acres for the terminal, alongside promises of a Hudson Riverfront Walkway, parking, and a waterfront promenade. The vision? A weekday ferry service that’s reliable, fairly priced, and maybe even offering extras like package delivery and tourism tie-ins. In short — a new front door to Manhattan that opens from Bayonne.

So here’s to Mayor Jimmy Davis and the City team for steering this ship forward. And here’s to us soon swapping traffic jams for ferry rides. Constable Hook neighbors, start practicing your best NYC wave — you’re about to need it.
